Unbelievable Kandy Views: Senarath Hotel - My Honest (Messy) Take!
Okay, buckle up buttercups, because I just got back from a stay at Unbelievable Kandy Views: Senarath Hotel's Grand View Tourist Guest Awaits!, and let me tell you, it was… an experience. Think of me as your slightly dishevelled, probably-still-jet-lagged travel companion, ready to spill the tea, the kithul treacle, and everything in between. Forget those sanitized, perfectly-polished reviews - this is the real deal.
First Impressions: Accessibility and… Oh, the View!
Let's just say, getting to the hotel was an adventure. The winding roads up to Kandy are not what you'd call a gentle stroll. Senarath Hotel, thankfully, boasts a car park [free of charge] and car park [on-site], a godsend after that white-knuckle drive. I'm not going to lie; the accessibility claims are a bit of a mixed bag. While they advertise facilities for disabled guests and an elevator, I didn't see them advertised, it felt a bit…challenging. Steep slopes and some narrow walkways. If you have mobility issues, definitely call ahead and be very specific about your needs. But, once you're in… whoa. The view really is grand. Absolutely breathtaking. Seriously. I actually gasped out loud when I saw it from the terrace. It's the kind of view that makes you feel like you could conquer the world (or at least eat a really large plate of rice and curry).
The Room: Nest, Nesting, and… More Nesting? (Plus, Wi-Fi!)
My room? Pretty standard, in a good way. Air conditioning that actually worked (a lifesaver!), a comfy bed, and thankfully, blackout curtains. Because, let's be honest, after a long day of temple hopping and tea tasting, you want to sleep. I was also happy to see free Wi-Fi, especially in the Available in all rooms. They have the Internet access – wireless, and Internet access – LAN if you are not a fan of wireless. Yes, I relied on this a lot. And thank goodness for the mini bar, which housed a crucial bottle of water and the means to a quiet night. I was also happy to see complimentary Tea. The additional toilet was also pretty sweet!
I really appreciated having an in-room safe box and a hair dryer. And the slippers were a nice touch. A small detail that I loved, the socket near the bed!
Dining & Drinking: Fueling the Adventure (and My Inner Carb Monster)
Okay, the food. Well, first, the Asian breakfast was delicious! The Asian cuisine in restaurant was also great. I’m not gonna lie, I had the buffet in restaurant breakfast, there was everything. I took advantage of the coffee/tea in restaurant and the bottle of water was always a nice touch. Now, you absolutely must try the local rice and curry. I did have vegetarian restaurant, and there are lots of options in Kandy, but more in the city.
I had a few dips in Swimming pool [outdoor] so I could enjoy my poolside bar and the Happy hour - that was the best part!
Things to Do & Ways to Relax: Spa-tacular (or Maybe Not?)
Let's be honest, I was most excited for the spa. They offer a Spa, the Spa/sauna, a Sauna, and a Steamroom. I was pumped. I even considered the Body wrap and Body scrub. The Pool with view was amazing.
Cleanliness & Safety: Putting My Germaphobe Brain at Ease (Mostly)
Look, I’m a bit of a germaphobe. I was pleased to see that the hotel went all-in on safety. The Daily disinfection in common areas, Rooms sanitized between stays, and the Hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere gave me peace of mind. I definitely saw the Staff trained in safety protocol.
Services & Conveniences: Little Touches, Big Impact There was a Concierge! The Concierge, the Doorman which was very useful. I took advantage of Laundry service! Very helpful.
The Quirks & Imperfections: Because Nothing's Perfect (Thank Goodness!)
No place is perfect. Senarath Hotel, as enchanting as it is, has a few… quirks. The service, while generally friendly, could be a little slow at times. This is Sri Lanka. Relax. Embrace the pace. The room sanitization opt-out available is a nice touch but didn’t apply to me. I also found the check-in/out [express] and Check-in/out [private] options. The Family/child friendly hotel I did not test.
The Verdict and My Unsolicited Advice:

Bohol's BEST Kept Secret: MJS Camp Site & Mountain Resort!
Alright, buckle up, buttercups! This isn't your sterile, pre-packaged travel itinerary. This is my trip to Grand View Tourist Guest by Senarath Hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Let's see if I survive…and hopefully, don't get eaten by a rogue monkey.
Day 1: Arrival, Confusion, and The Quest for Rice & Curry (aka, I'm Already Jet-Lagged)
- Morning (or what passes for it at 3 AM): Landed in Colombo. Glorious. (Said sarcastically, because my brain is currently sludge.) Immigration was a blur of forms, sweaty brows, and the faint scent of something I couldn't quite identify. Smelled a bit like old spices and… opportunity? Let's go with opportunity.
- Transportation Angst: Found a driver. He spoke English! Bonus! (The air conditioning? Not such a bonus. More like a whisper in the face of a furnace.) Kandy is a long drive. I’m pretty sure I saw a yak at some point. Or was it a water buffalo? Honestly, my sleep-deprived brain can't be trusted.
- Afternoon: Arrived at Grand View Tourist Guest by Senarath Hotel: Okay, the view is grand. Seriously, I feel like I'm perched on top of the world…well, Kandy at least. The hotel itself is…rustic. Charming. (Translation: probably seen better days but has character.) Check-in was smooth. The staff is super lovely and seem genuinely excited to have me. (Either that, or my jet-lagged daze is so captivating, they can't help but smile.)
- The Rice & Curry Hunt: Right. Food. Gotta eat. Need sustenance. Asked the hotel about dinner. Apparently, there's a restaurant a short walk away. "Short walk," they said. My legs are screaming. Found it. Ate. Glorious. Rice and curry is the nectar of the Gods. The curry was so spicy and so good I think cried a little. After dinner, I decided I deserved an ice cream. It was delicious.
- Evening Shenanigans: Back at the hotel, I attempted to shower. The water pressure was…a trickle. But hey, I'm a traveler! I survived. Fell asleep around 8 PM, dreaming of monkeys and rice. (Or, more accurately, falling in love with both simultaneously.)
Day 2: Temple Tantrums (Not Mine, Thankfully) and the Majestic Tea Garden
- Morning: Kandy's Temple of the Tooth: Arrived at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. I am not very religious, but I will give the Temple of Tooth what it deserves. The architecture is stunning. The sheer number of people, a lot, and I quickly got lost in a sea of flowing skirts and camera phones. Some people seemed very devout. I found it very moving. Others, well, they were definitely pushing to the front. (I may or may not have accidentally elbowed someone. Sorry!) But overall it's magical.
- Afternoon: Tea Garden Delights and Monkey Business: After temple fatigue, it was off to a tea plantation. Oh. My. Goodness. That view. The rolling hills, the perfectly manicured tea bushes…I could have stayed there forever. Learned about the tea-making process, from leaf to cup. (So much work! I salute all tea-drinkers now.) The tea tasting was divine. I may have bought enough tea to last me a year. (I'm a sucker for a good souvenir.)
- The Monkey Encounter: Back at the hotel, I witnessed some monkeys doing a "break and enter" into someone else’s room. They were so cheeky. They were everywhere in the town. I was warned! I thought that I managed to escape them, but one of them showed up in the lobby! It made me so nervous. Luckily everyone was very calm and managed to get it out of there.
- Evening Ramblings: I have the feeling that I'll be in this country for longer.
- Night: This is the part where I wanted to chill and relax a bit. But it's raining. Heavily. I can hear it like a drum. Is there anything better? I don't think so.
Day 3: A Lake, a Hike, and the Undeniable Charm of Kandy (So Far, So Good)
- Morning: Kandy Lake and a Boat Ride: Okay, so the lake is a stunner. Took a boat ride. Peaceful. Serene. (And thankfully, no giant lake monsters…that I saw, anyway.) The air was fresh, the sun was shining. I think I finally started to relax.
- Afternoon Hike: I was told about a hike that should be pretty easy. "Easy," they said. Yeah, well, my legs disagree. The views from the top were worth the sweat, though.
- Evening: Kandy City Walk, finding a good restaurant Trying to find a place to eat dinner, that's actually good, is definitely a challenge. The places with good reviews, were all booked. In the end, I just went up and sat any restaurant that had a vacancy.
- Night: I made a friend! I met a woman, from Portugal, at a restaurant. We talked for hours, and for the first time here, I didn't feel alone.
Day 4: Departure (and a Tear or Two?)
- Morning: Packing. Sigh. Saying goodbye to that view. The hotel staff gave me a hug goodbye. So nice!
- Departure: The driver arrived, the goodbye-hug feeling was enough to make me cry. The drive to the airport felt like it passed in a blur. I was tired but somehow I didn't want to leave.
Post-Trip Debrief (A Few Weeks Later):
Okay, so maybe this itinerary wasn't perfect. There were chaotic moments, moments of bliss, and moments of pure, unadulterated exhaustion. But that's the point, right? That's what makes travel real. That's what makes it memorable. And Kandy, with all its quirks, its charm, its monkeys, and its magnificent views, I'm already plotting my return.
